Pitbull History

Pitbulls are medium sized dogs. Males would weigh eighty pounds and the females would weigh nearly sixty pounds. These dogs have muscular, well built body. These dogs are loyal, intelligent and aggressive. Let us get to know the pit bull history. England had important role pit bull history. The England is the native of modern pit bulls ancestors.

At present the old English bull dog, English white terrier, tan and black terriers are in reality extinct. But these breeds were highly respected and loved animals during their time. Each county in England had one terrier such was the popularity of the terriers. These terriers were very useful to those English people at that time.

Vermin had been giving all sorts of problem in those days. They provided unpleasant scare, ruined the crops, damaged the property and functioned as the vehicle for the fleas that were responsible for the spread of black plague.

Terrier destroyed the vermin very efficiently and it solved many problems that were discussed little earlier. These terriers showed their ability in rat baiting, sports of badger etc. The pit bulls owe their aggression and killer instinct to these terriers.

It is true that mastiffs of different sizes existed in England since long. But only during the renaissance the formal distinctions became a reality. These dogs were used for guarding, battle and some other utility purpose those days. The farmers to control the bull at the time of castration, breeding or slaughtering, utilized these dogs.

These dogs, better known as bulldogs helped the farmer by controlling the bull. The farmers were protected by these dogs from the bulls while they are at work such as castration, breeding etc. these bull dogs will hold the nose of the bull tightly till the bull are subdued. Such was the power and aggression of these dogs. These dogs had heavily built body and can hold even the bull that is struggling violently even when these dogs are injured in the melee.

Latter as the years passed, these dogs were used for bear biting, bull biting etc. During the queen Elizabeth period these sports were very popular means of entertainment. Since these sports are cruel, they were abolished in the year 1835. But people used to conduct the dog fighting under clandestine means.

Since bulldogs were not showing much interest in dog fighting [in contrast to the bull baiting and bear baiting], these dogs were crossed with terriers [English black, white, and tan terriers.].

The breeders worked hard to produce an offspring, which will be intelligent enough to show aggression during the dog, fight and remain calm and controlled at the hands of trainers and owners.

During mid eighteenth century these dogs were brought to the United States of America by immigrants from England. There these dogs were bred to be larger and stockier than the original. Thus, a breed called American pit bull terrier evolved. This would explain to many the pit bull history. Those who are much concerned about the aggression of the pit bulls will now be aware of the reason , if they go through this pit bull history article, is it not.
